The Pet Apothecary’s compounding specialists are experienced and comfortable with working with all animals, including household dogs and cats, equines, birds, small animals and rodents, reptiles, and even some exotic animals. It can be imprecise or even dangerous to attempt to accurately split a tablet in half to match your small pet guinea pig’s prescribed dosage. Instead of attempting this at home, let the compounding experts at The Pet Apothecary give your pets the professional, dedicated medical attention they deserve. Our pharmacists can customize the dosage form of veterinary medicines to be palatable or even enjoyable for your pet! Our primary goal is to ensure that your pets are comfortable and happy while receiving the proper medical attention that they require.
Capsules and Tablets
Tablets are a tightly-packed, solid form of oral medication and are the most traditional dosage form. They are useful for formulating compounded medication, which often adjusts and combines existing medications and dosages. If your pet does not mind taking tablets, The Pet Apothecary compounding specialists are happy to create them.
To create capsules, our specialists use compounding techniques to encapsulate just the right concentration, strength, and combination of medications into hard gelatin shells that have no flavor. Almost all medications can be formulated as handmade capsules, thanks to our experienced pharmacists and our packing technology, though the size of the capsules may vary depending on the volume of medication needed.
The Pet Apothecary’s tablets or capsules can be easily and comfortably administered at home under the careful supervision of pet owners so that frequent visits to the vet or species specialist for medication administration will no longer be necessary. Pet owners, caretakers, species specialists, or veterinarians should carefully administer the tablets or capsules each time in order to prevent choking, overdose, or other related injuries. Depending on your pet’s preferences, it may also be possible to administer your pet’s medication by grinding tablets into powder form and mixing this into your pet’s dry or wet food bowl to help diffuse the taste of the medication. Please consult with our pharmacists, your veterinarian, or your species specialist if you have any questions or concerns about administering medcine your pet.
Many pets may find it difficult to swallow capsules or liquids, but all pets love treats, so chewable medications are a perfect alternative dosage form. The Pet Apothecary’s in-house compounding specialists can create delicious “chewables” for your pet. Our chewables only consist of your pet’s prescribed medication as well as gelatin and optional natural flavorings or colorings to mask the medication’s taste, look, and smell. Almost all medications can be formulated as handmade chewables, thanks to our experienced pharmacists.
We can adjust the color, smell, flavor, texture, and consistency of medication with customized combinations and amounts of natural food flavorings such as chicken and salmon, food colorings, and gelatin to appeal to your pet’s food tastes. If you’re unsure whether your pet will accept a certain chewable flavor, we would be happy to offer a medication-free sample of flavored gelatin for your pet to try!
Our chewables can be easily and comfortably administered at home under the careful supervision of pet owners so that frequent visits to the vet or species specialist for medication administration will no longer be necessary. The chewables are small, soft, and easy to swallow, so you can either administer the medication on its own as a “treat” or mix the medication in your pet’s wet or dry food bowl. The chewables are conveniently sliceable for administering smaller dosages at a time or for further disguising the taste of medication. Even pets who have difficulty biting or chewing will not have a problem with chewables, thanks to their soft gelatinous consistency.
Our chewables are convenient, delicious, and entirely customizable to your pet’s needs and preferences. Your pet will be happy and healthy, and you will be saving yourself the time and headache of administering more traditional pills or capsules. The only downside to The Pet Apothecary’s chewables is that your pet might enjoy them too much!
Liquid medications are another oral delivery form available at The Pet Apothecary. This formulation may be most suitable for pets who are incapable of swallowing pills and capsules whole or who do not have the appetite to eat chewables.
As with our chewable formulations, we are happy to adjust the color, smell, and flavor of our liquid formulations with customized combinations and amounts of natural food flavorings and colorings to appeal to your pet’s food tastes. We cater to all species of animals so we offer a wide variety of food flavorings to suit their diets. Some of our current flavors chicken, tuna, beef, fish, peanut butter, mango, apple, raspberry, strawberry, banana, cherry, grape, tutti fruiti, pina colada, marshmallow, and vanilla butternut. If you’re unsure whether your pet will accept a certain liquid flavor, we would be happy to offer a medication-free sample of liquid flavor for your pet to try!
The Pet Apothecary’s liquid formulations can be easily and comfortably administered at home under the careful supervision of pet owners so that frequent visits to the vet or species specialist for medication administration will no longer be necessary. Some pet owners may choose to mix the liquid medication into their pet’s wet or dry food bowl to be consumed alongside a meal. This method is most effective if your medication does not have a strong taste or if your pet has a larger appetite. Other pet owners may choose to directly administer the liquid medication into their pet’s mouth using a syringe for aim and dosage accuracy. Regardless of your administration method, liquid formulations are the most versatile dosage form of veterinary medications, so it is an excellent dosage form for you to start out with if your pet is unaccustomed to taking medication.
Transdermal medications are formulated as highly concentrated topical creams or gels that are directly applied either to directly your pet’s affected area to maximize transdermal absorption at the source or to your pet’s pinna, or ear flap, where there is typically very little fur.
The administration method is almost universally applicable for a wide variety of pet species and breeds and almost all medications can be formulated as transdermal creams or gels. This makes transdermal medications appropriate substitutes for any pets who suffer from nausea, oral health conditions, digestive conditions, or other oral health conditions that may prevent them from taking pill, capsule, chewable, or liquid formulations. At The Pet Apothecary, we recommend transdermal formulations as the dosage form most suitable for cats, who may become violently resistant against other medication administration methods, such as pilling. Transdermal medications may also be effective for smaller pets, such as rodents, which may have difficulty swallowing pills or capsules and eating chewables that are too large.
The Pet Apothecary’s transdermal formulations can be easily and comfortably administered at home under the careful supervision of pet owners so that frequent visits to the vet or species specialist for medication administration will no longer be necessary. These transdermal formulations are easy for pet owners to administer at home using a syringe for an accurate gel dosage or simply using their hands to smear cream onto the skin. Pet owners should take care that their pets do not remove their medication by shielding the application area from reach, such as by using a pet cone if necessary. Pet owners should also prevent their own skin from being exposed to their pet’s compounded transdermal creams or gels by wearing disposable gloves when administering medication.
